A fingerprint appointment is only one part of a background check. The requesting employer, licensing board, school, or other authorized organization determines which check is needed and where the result must be sent. Confirming those details before fingerprinting can help avoid a misdirected result or a submission that does not meet the request.
Start with the organization requesting the check
Ask the requesting organization for its exact fingerprinting instructions before booking. Find out whether it requires an Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) check, an eligible FBI check, or both; what reason or purpose should be used; and whether the result must be transmitted directly to that organization.
The recipient may provide a specific agency name, destination, identifying number, form, or process for electronic submission. Use the instructions as given rather than selecting a recipient based on a similar name or guessing which office handles the request. If the instructions are unclear, the requesting organization—not the fingerprinting provider—is the right place to resolve them.
BCI, FBI, and ink cards are not interchangeable
Ohio BCI compares fingerprints against criminal fingerprint records. Ohio Attorney General guidance explains that electronic WebCheck submission or card scanning is generally required unless an exemption applies, and that requirements depend on the employment or licensing purpose. The Ohio Attorney General's background-check overview describes the state process.
An FBI check is not automatically appropriate for every personal request. The Ohio Attorney General notes that BCI processes FBI checks only for authorized Ohio employment purposes; personal-use FBI Identity History Summary and immigration requests follow FBI instructions instead. A paper FD-258 ink fingerprint card may be needed for a particular recipient or process, but it is not a substitute for an electronic submission when the requesting organization requires electronic WebCheck results.
Confirm the destination before the appointment
Before providing fingerprints, check the recipient's written directions and make sure the purpose, check type, and destination all match. Bring valid state-issued photo identification and any agency forms or reason instructions. If an employer or licensing organization gave a code or specific destination, verify it with that organization rather than relying on a code from an unrelated request.
If a form asks where results should go, copy the destination carefully. A provider can collect fingerprints, but the requesting entity defines what it will accept. Do not send sensitive identity documents or fingerprint information through a public comment or unsecured message; share them only through the recipient's approved secure process.
If the wrong information was submitted
Contact the requesting organization promptly and explain what may have been entered incorrectly. The Attorney General's FAQs state that BCI cannot correct submitted transaction information, so a new submission may be necessary. Do not assume the original transaction can simply be redirected or amended.
A rejection letter relates to the identified check; it does not automatically mean both a BCI and FBI check were rejected. The Attorney General also distinguishes fingerprint resubmission from challenging a criminal record. Follow the instructions attached to the specific notice and ask the requesting organization or BCI for clarification when needed. No provider can guarantee a result, approval, or processing time.
